Understanding M.A.T.: the use of medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat substance abuse disorders, primarily opiod and alcohol addiction. The course will include addiction models; defining addiction; risk factors for addiction; current addiction trends; how to access SUD; screening tools; ASAM Criteria; how medications work for opiod addiction; how medications work for alcohol addiction.

Kelly Michael Moselle, MA.,MS, CAM-ll, is the Director of Administration and Member Services at LPCA.  Kelly has worked in the field of addiction and recovery since 2008. He currently serves as the Director of Administration and Member Services at the Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia, while maintaining a small private practice.  Additionally, Kelly has offered groups in codependency, managing recovery, anger management and clinical supervision. Most recently, Kelly was honored as the recipient of Caron’s 2019 Educational Excellence Award for demonstrating exceptional wisdom and leadership in supporting and embracing programs that educate students, families and communities in the awareness of substance use disorders.

Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to discuss the concept of “addiction as a brain disease”.
  • Participants will be able to demonstrate how substances interact with the brain.
  • Participants will understand the uses of medications in the treatment of addiction.
  • Participants will be able to define the role of MAT as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
  • Participants will be able to describe the particular uses of Agonists, Partial Agonists and Antagonists.
  • Participants will be able to  explain the differences between Agonists, Partial Agonists and Antagonists.
